Help & FAQ

Q:

How do I choose a removalist?

A:

It can be difficult to know which removalist to choose. It’s a great idea to ask for referrals or talk to real estate agents or solicitors where the removalist is based. Also, check that the removalist is an Australian Furniture Removers Association (AFRA) member. To become an AFRA member, an organisation must undergo a rigorous application process, guaranteeing to operate at certain high service standards, and adhering to strict guidelines, policies, and a code of conduct. For more information, feel free to call AFRA directly on 1800 671 806.

Handy Hints

  • Make sure you use strong cartons. Use small cartons for crockery, books, and fragile items.
  • When packing plates, wrap them individually, and stand plates on their edge. This is their strongest point.
  • Put heavier items on the bottom of the carton and lighter items on top.
  • Label each carton and keep an inventory.
  • Clean and defrost refrigerators and freezers at least 24hrs prior to uplift. You will be surprised at the amount of water that comes out even in auto-defrost fridges and freezers.
  • Do not water plants 24hrs prior to uplift as water can drain from the plants into the removalist truck and damage your belongings.
  • Keep last minute essentials and personal items that you will need with you organised and set aside so these do not inadvertently get packed away with the goods meant for the removalist truck.
  • It is a good idea to get children looked after by a friend, relative or neighbour if possible on the day of the move, as this will leave you free from distraction and make things easier for you.
  • Be sure to arrange for your mail to be forwarded to your new address.
  • Use a box for priority items and label it ‘Priority’. This box can be used for packing such things as keys, remote controls, screws and bolts for items of furniture that have been dismantled, computers, TV and stereo electrical leads, kettle, etc. This could include any item that you will need to access when you first arrive at your new home.
