7 Things Not to Do When Moving

posted in Moving by

Here at Lynns, we focus primarily on one goal: making your home or office relocation simpler and better. Our mission is to make moving hassle-free; an efficient process that goes smoothly and successfully. To that end, we’re constantly devising ways (and sharing them with you) to improve your move. But what about the other side? Are there things to avoid doing when relocating? We narrowed them down to help you out. Here’s a quick list of 7 things you definitely should not do when moving.

1. DON’T wait to clean the house.

Within your first few days of moving, make sure to do a thorough cleaning of your new house. Even a brand new home will have dust and debris settling once all your items have been delivered. A total clean gets your house ready for you and also gives you a chance to become familiar with all your home’s nooks and crannies.

2. DON’T forget to change the locks.

It’s a smart safety precaution to have new locks installed when you move into a new home or office. Even though you may have gotten the keys from the previous owner or tenant, you are unable to know if any copies exist. Better to be safe and worry-free. Head to your local locksmith soon after your move.

3. DON’T neglect to make a plan for your pets.

Moving can be stressful for your pets. To alleviate their anxiety, have a plan for how to integrate them into their new home. It’s a good idea to allow them a smaller section of the house to explore first. This keeps them from growing overwhelmed. Leave them in a bathroom or bedroom for a few hours, and be extra attentive to their need for toilet breaks!

4. DON’T plan to grocery shop your first night home.

Nothing is more unwelcome than the idea of cooking dinner your first night in your new house. Instead, plan to take your family and grab takeout. You can enjoy the first meal in your new abode sitting on the floor amongst the boxes. It makes for a great memory and saves the hassle of cooking, cleaning, and organising after a long moving day.

5. DON’T forget your “vitals” box.

An instant way to improve your move by 100%? Pack a vitals box. This small box or bag will travel with you in your vehicle to your new home. In it you’ll find all those vital little things you need and can usually never find. This is a source of comfort when you may feel overwhelmed by the move. Include in your vitals box phone chargers, keys, medicines, batteries, toothbrushes, and even your coffee and coffeemaker for the next morning. You’ll thank yourself for doing so.

6. DON’T put off setting up the utilities.

You’ve arrived at your new home. Yay! Uh-oh. Someone forgot to turn on the electricity. Although moving is a busy time, be sure not to forget to get your utilities sorted prior to your arrival. This will allow you to feel at home right away and ensures all your modern conveniences will be immediately available. (Another great reason to hire an expert removalist: more time for you to handle these nitty-gritty details!)

7. DON’T be a stranger!

After a few days in your new home, get out and explore your neighbourhood. This is a great way to dive right in and get to know your new community. The whole family can explore the area together, and you’ll begin to feel that you are right at home where you belong.
